Chapel Attendance and Exemption Overview

Attendance

  • Chapel attendance is mandatory for all full-time students and is a graduation requirement
  • Students swipe their student ID cards (or sign in with a chapel worker if a card is missing or not working) upon entering the chapel in order to receive credit. No credit will be given to students who arrive more than five minutes late or who leave before the conclusion of chapel at 11:35am
  • All full time students are allotted chapel absences equaling 20% of the total number of required chapels (this usually equates to 8 skips/semester) These absences are to be reserved for planned and unforeseen conflicts (which includes sickness, appointments, etc).

Exemption

  • Semester Exemption: Off-campus students may qualify for exemption from mandatory chapel attendance and may have the requirement adjusted or possibly waived. A Chapel Exemption Form can be picked up at the Chapel Office and must be submitted during the first three weeks of the semester.
  • Extended Absence: If a student is absent from chapel for an extended period of time (3+ chapels in a row) due to illness or other extenuating circumstances, we will give you back 80% of the credits you missed. The student must email a doctor’s note in the case of extended illness to the chapel office within 15 days of the absence in order to be considered for this partial exemption.
  • Athletes: If a student misses chapel due to a conflict with their athletic team’s schedule, we will give them exemption for that day. Each coach will be responsible to send the date(s) and travel rosters for days students miss chapel.
  • School Organized Trip: If a student misses chapel due to a conflict with a school organized trip, they may be exempt from chapel that day. The chapel department will be notified of the absence by the office of Academic Affairs and adjust their account accordingly.
  • Part-Time Students: Students who are off-campus and have part-time status are automatically exempt from mandatory chapel attendance and do not have to apply for exemption. Part-time students who live on campus are required to attend chapel as normal.
  • Other: Students who miss chapel for sickness, doctor’s appointments, counseling, or any other circumstances resulting in one or two consecutive absences, are required to use their built-in skips. These absences are not eligible for exemption.

Summaries

  • Students who miss more than their allotted number of absences during a given semester will be required to complete chapel summaries in order to fulfill their chapel credit requirements. For the first five summaries there will be a 250 word minimum requirement; the sixth through the tenth summary will have a 500 word minimum requirement; and the eleventh summary and beyond will have a 1000 word minimum requirement.
  • Chapel summaries are considered part of your academic work at the college, and are therefore subject to plagiarism rules found in the Student Handbook (p. 23). Similarly, the chapel department does not allow any amount of AI use to write summaries.
  • Students who owe fifteen or more chapel summaries for multiple semesters may face suspension or other disciplinary action.

Other

  • The use of electronic devices is prohibited during all chapels. If a chapel office worker or any staff member sees you on your electronic device your chapel credit for that day will be taken away.
  • Graduating seniors who have not completed chapel requirements for each semester of enrollment will have their diploma held and will not be allowed to participate in commencement or be considered a graduate of ÀÇÓѸó.
